Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a series of emails between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.

Summers commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward observing their development".

The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed messages revealed that Summers communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the AI firm said it understood his choice to depart.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the governing body," the organization stated.

Political Context

This development comes after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on recently to approve a bill that would require the federal prosecutors to release its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will afterward move to the office of the White House for signature. The President has stated he expects to sign the bill, after changing his stance on the subject following objections from his supporters.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked messages made public by the legislative panel recently mentioned multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.

The messages indicated that the professor and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often attempting to connect the official to influential international personalities.

After the correspondence were shared with the general audience, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my poor choice to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and mend bonds with the persons nearest to me".

Summers served in senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He presided over the university from five years and continues to be a professor there. When stating his departure from public roles previously on Monday, he said he would persist with his educational duties.

Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that he was not connected with the organization.

He became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its chief executive the company leader.
