Bluefin Fish Fetches Record Sum of $3.2m at Tokyo New Year Sale

A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.

The winning offer for the 535-pound fish came from the company of a nationwide sushi chain, which operates restaurants domestically and internationally.

"The first tuna heralds a prosperous start," commented the entrepreneur, a regular participant at the traditional new year's auction.

Known as the Tuna King, this industry figure is famous for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic new year auctions.

Bidding Surprise and Historic Precedent

Following the auction, the winner told the press that he was "taken aback at the final price," stating, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price soared rapidly."

This most recent acquisition exceeds his own notable purchases:

• He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
• He paid 155 million yen in 2013.
• In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after once remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The first auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different food company, which stated the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.

The intense energy at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has transformed into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly prepared for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments shortly after the auction concluded.

"I sense like I've started the year in a good way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," remarked one happy diner.
