A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property near the Verona region to execute an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the location and a third person who ran away following the explosion was apprehended not long after. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area showed the building reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Negotiators had been sent to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member caused the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno informed the media.

A propane tank had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor was convinced the blast had happened on a floor above the access point and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to reporters, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
